Meet Ron

Ron Collins is a lifelong resident of San Mateo County, and, like his wife Gayle, grew up in San Carlos, attending Arundel and Tierra Linda schools, as well as Carlmont High School. He is the father of two children and a local small business owner for over 35 years.

His experience and strong regional partnerships allow him to be proactive in responding to the impacts of COVID-19 and help San Carlos survive the economic challenges that face our businesses and residents.

FOCUS ON SAN CARLOS

Ron’s connection to San Carlos is a long one, and he has a sense of protectiveness when it comes to this community. His experience on the Planning Commission prior to being on the Council gave him a deeper understanding of the problems and challenges homeowners and small businesses face when trying to get their city approvals. It also taught him the importance of not only having competent city staff, but working with them and applicants to ensure that all projects are sensitive to the needs of the community while compliant with building codes and regulations.

While a member of the City’s Economic Development Advisory Commission, Ron helped develop a blueprint to attract high quality commercial enterprises to San Carlos, while ensuring that they contributed not only to our financial stability, but to the needs of our community.

While a member of the City Council, Ron has worked on a variety of Council committees. He was a member of the single house remodel sub-committee, served as the City’s representative to the 2+2 Committee with San Carlos School District Board representatives, and created a new housing sub-committee specifically to focus on the pursuit of more affordable housing.

Most recently he served as one of the two Council sub-committee members ensuring that the Laurel St. closures and Bike Loop program were implemented and adapted to benefit our community as a whole.

Leadership in San Mateo County

As a Councilmember, his appointment to the countywide Housing Endowment And Regional Trust (HEART of SMC), and the San Mateo County Housing and Community Development Committee have strengthened his commitment to making sure we do our part to address the critical shortage of affordable housing in San Mateo County.

As a member of both the San Mateo County Transit District and Caltrain boards of directors, Ron has worked to bring more bus routes and train stops to San Carlos. His commitment to supporting public transportation is driven by his desire to reduce our carbon footprint and reach our environmental goals by making public transportation more accessible and affordable.

Background and Education

Ron was born in San Mateo, and moved to San Carlos with his parents when he was five years old. After earning his BA from UCLA and master’s degree from San Francisco State University, Ron worked in Half Moon Bay as a public school teacher and administrator for 7 years, and entered the insurance business at the age of 30. After briefly living in San Mateo, Ron and Gayle returned to San Carlos to raise their two children and make sure they too had the benefit of an education in San Carlos Schools.

Ron enjoys golf, swimming, dining on Laurel St., and traveling, especially the annual trip to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival with Gayle.
